Barbara Agnes Hurkes

Barbara Agnes Hurkes, 85, passed away peacefully on June 29,

2024, in Maderia, OH.

Barbara was born October 1st , 1938, at the family farm, with the

help of her grandma Haan acting as delivery midwife, near

Kranzburg, SD. Barbara was the daughter of Joseph and Cecelia

Fischer.

From a young age, Barbara helped out around the farm and

later attended Waverly High School near Kranzburg. She

married and moved to OH, where she became a homemaker

and bookkeeper. When her youngest son reached school age,

she became a public-school bus driver for the Lakota School

District near Cincinnati, OH.

Family was at the center of Barbara’s life. She was a devoted

mother to three children, Jeffery, Sharon, and Michael. She also

enjoyed her time with Lindsey and Liam and cherished her role

as their grandmother.

In her free time, Barbara enjoyed traveling with her husband,

Chesley “Lucky” Sullivan. When she was not traveling, she

knitted hundreds, if not thousands of baby blankets, hats, and

booties for the Southwestern Ohio chapter of the Linus Project.

Barbara is survived by her children Jeffery Hurkes of San Diego,

CA, Sharon Archer of Liberty Township, OH, Michael Hurkes of

South Portland, ME, and her grandchildren, Lindsey Hurkes of

Bath, ME, Liam Hurkes of Westbrook, ME, along with her Sister

Marion (Hellen) Fischer of Watertown, SD, and brother Donald

Fischer of Kranzburg, SD, who will all carry her memory in their

hearts.

She is predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Cecelia Fischer,

husband Chesley “Lucky” Sullivan, brothers Ralph and Tony

Fischer, sisters Theresa Brady and MaryAnn Sherman.

A graveside gathering/internment will be held on Monday

August 12th at 11:00 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mason, OH. In lieu of

flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of Southwest

Ohio, in honor of Barbara’s memory.
