Edward "Cap" Gest Hodge

October 27, 1941 — November 8, 2024

Edward Gest Hodge Jr, of Cincinnati, OH - a cherished soul of remarkable spirit, departed this world on November 8, 2024. Affectionately known as "Cap" to his friends and family. A devoted servant to his country, he dedicated a portion of his life to The United States Army, where he honed his skills as an aircraft mechanic. His exceptional talents were recognized with the prestigious Aircraft Mechanic Badge, alongside commendation for his marksmanship in both carbine and rifle competitions.

Cap lived a life enriched by adventure, spending much of his existence upon the water. He embarked on an extraordinary journey aboard the Alianora, sailing from the scenic shores of Norway to the vibrant British Virgin Islands, returning her to the Bitter End Yacht Club.

As a proud Merchant Marine for the U.S. Coast Guard and a Master Sea Captain, Cap's life was a tapestry of nautical exploits and worldly travels. His zest for life extended beyond the horizon; he nurtured a passion for backgammon, culminating in the establishment of his own club in Louisville, Kentucky, where he shared countless hours of camaraderie and competition with friends.

A true globetrotter, Cap traversed the globe, gathering experiences from diverse destinations including Alaska, Nigeria, St. Croix, California, and Mackinac Island, among many others. His adventurous spirit was matched only by his appreciation for the beauty of our world. In addition to his military service and sailing accomplishments, Captain Gest was an active member of the Sycamore Gun Club, where he pursued his interests in target shooting and sporting clays.

  E. Gest Hodge leaves behind a legacy that embodies the essence of adventure, maritime passion, and the joy of human connection. His remarkable journey and unwavering love for the sea will forever resonate in the hearts and memories of those who had the privilege to know him. He is survived by his three Nieces, Carrie ( Earl) Williams of Columbus, OH, Elizabeth (Earl) Ruhf of State College, PA, and Jennifer Logan Earl of Columbus, OH.
